Plus most of the silver is a byproduct from zinc and lead mines.If the major downturn continues they will have to pay to keep the price down, they won't do that they will just let it run untill it tops out, and move onto copper.

I think the price bifurcation will be east vs west, not merely physical vs paper (ie spot price vs futures or ETF). Westerners will _never_ get the genuine market price for their metal. Never. Easterners will. The big bankers will send all the metal east and pocket the difference until there is zero metal traded in the west. Western governments will make protecting assets with metals impossible for the populace. There can be no way out allowed. Just IMHO.

It's 2024, and you think the public wants to go back to carrying around shiny bits of metal to pay for things? You actually think businesses want the hassle of dealing with fakes, purity, weight, storage, protection and insurance of physical money (be it any physical money)? This is laughable. Precious metals are a good investment for any diversified portfolio but the days of its use as physical money is long over. I'm 60 and even I can see the digital currency writing on the wall. Watch young people pay for things, they don't even use cash anymore. They just use their iphone.

The US prior to the Civil War had a bimetallism standard with the dollar valued at a ratio of 15:1 gold/silver. Market conditions unfortunately do not remain stable and that 15:1 was upset a few times during which either gold or silver fled the country. Foreign silver coins such as the Spanish silver dollar circulated freely in America. Congress finally outlawed the use of foreign coins via the Coinage Act of 1857.

Gresham's Law: bad money drives out good. US experienced this in 1964 when silver was removed from the coinage. The public responded by pulling all the 90% silver coins from circulation and hoarding them. Silver did continue for a few years in the 40% Kennedy half dollar.
